myofascial release

What is myofascial release?

Myofascia refers to the “web” or network of fiber connecting the fascia (connective tissue between the skin and muscle, and the muscle and bones) and the muscular system. Myofascial release works that connection to achieve greater movement and flow of blood, water, lymphatic fluids, and nerve impulses. By improving this movement, myofascial release can eliminate pain, increase range of motion, correct posture, and allow the tissue to reorganize for greater flexibility and function.

What does myofascial release do for me?

The fascia, especially the deep fascia that interpenetrates and surrounds muscle and bones, is richly innervated with sensory receptors that report the presence of pain, chemical change, temperature, pressure, and movement. Manual manipulation and release of restricted or overly tense fascia can relieve symptoms including:

How does myofascial release work?

While practicing myofascial release, the doctor or therapist will directly manipulate the fascial layer. This is done by identifying a barrier (or restriction) in the myofascial web, then with fingers, knuckles or even the forearm, sink slowly but firmly into the tissue to stretch both the muscle tissue and fascia. Once both are stretched, the therapist will move or slide the fascia while releasing the tissue, separating taut connections between the two. The process is then repeated on further barriers until the therapy is complete.
