deep tissue massage
What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage is an intense form of therapy directed at a specific muscle, muscle group, or joint. By starting at the surface and working down, the doctor or healer can access layers of tissue that begin to allow much broader range of motion in the muscle or joint and in the muscular-skeletal system. This also helps chiropractic adjustments move more freely and with less discomfort.
What does deep tissue massage do for me?
Deep tissue massage can be focused at specific points in your body, relieving tension and releasing muscle knots (or “adhesions”). These adhesions can limited movement, restrict blood flow, and cause pain or inflammation. Deep tissue massage can also be used to relax and realign tendons and ligaments, assisting with wrist, elbow and shoulder pain associated with repetitive motion and sports injuries.
Combined with chiropractic care, deep tissue massage can alleviate or relieve a number of conditions:
- Chronic pain
- Muscle spasms
- Limited mobility
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Arthritis pain
- Fibromyalgia
How does deep tissue massage work?
The doctor or therapist using deep tissue massage will first identify adhesions (muscle knots and spasms), inflamed or contracted connective tissue (tendons and ligaments), or trigger points (hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle). Starting gently on the surface above and working deeper to the underlying problem, the therapist will work with fingers, knuckles, hands, and even elbows and forearms to relax the tissue in that specific area.
